14 October, 1947 at 10.22 am, Capt. Yeager flew the Bell
X-1 at a speed of 670mph (Mach 1.06) breaking the sound
barrier for the first time in human history.

One
of three X-15A's built serial # 56-6670, is mainly made
up of titamium and stainless steel with some aluminum for
internal use. It is covered with Inconel-X nickel alloy
steel to withstand high temperatures. During test flights
in 1967, a maxximum speed of Mach 6.7 was achieved.
